Leicester University's museum studies department has been ranked as Britain's top research facility.
The National Research Assessment Exercise (NRAE) rated the department as having the best cluster of researchers of any discipline at any UK university.
The NRAE judged 65 per cent of the research submitted by the department to be "world class". Established more than 40 years ago and headed by Richard Sandell, it has 14 academic staff.
A department spokesman said the results were an indication of the discipline's growing academic importance.
The department's Research Centre for Museums and Galleries has advised on national policy for learning, disability and social inclusion.
