Michael Dixon, the director of the Natural History Museum, is to become chair of the National Museum Directors' Conference (NMDC).
He will take over from Mark Jones, the director of the Victoria and Albert Museum, in April.
Dixon has run the Natural History Museum since June 2004. Prior to that, he was director general of the Zoological Society of London.
Before taking up his position at the society he spent 20 years in the scientific, technical and medical publishing industry, after gaining a BSc in zoology from Imperial College, London and a DPhil from the University of York.
