A research project into the therapeutic benefits of allowing hospital patients to handle museum artefacts has been launched after securing a £293,000 grant.
University College London's Museums and Collections will carry out the Heritage in Hospitals project.
Funding from the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) will enable a clinical psychologist to oversee projects at several locations, including the British Museum.
The AHRC made 13 awards to the value of £3.2m in this year's large research grant round. Art historian at Birmingham University, Richard Clay, was awarded £282,000 to research suburban Birmingham between 1880 and 1960 in partnership with Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery.
A £76,000 award to Lampeter University will facilitate research at Newport Museum and Heritage Centre into the medieval ship found on the banks of the River Usk in 2002.
