Smaller museums may be able to take advantage of a £70m government initiative that aims to strengthen the relationship between communities and voluntary groups.
Cash is being allocated from the Communitybuilders fund, which is a joint programme between the Office of the Third Sector and the Department of Communities and Local Government.
It is hoped that more than 400 organisations will benefit from the programme, which is part of a £100m package for the voluntary sector.
A Communities and Local Government spokeswoman said museum applications could be considered.
"If a museum provides the kind of services that offer community involvement, it may qualify," she said.
