Somerset Heritage Roadshow 2008, Glastonbury Abbey
5 May
This heritage extravaganza features more than 50 stalls displaying material related to exhibitions, events and activities in the county's museums. Among the highlights will be medieval sword fighting and Iron Age face-painting.

In light of the launch of the Cultural Olympiad, the former England football manager Graham Taylor and broadcaster Munira Mirza consider whether art and sport can coexist.
Do Museums Matter?, Urbis, Manchester
16 May
The debate will be hosted by Jennifer Latto, chairwoman of the Heritage Lottery Fund's North West Committee. Among the panellists will be Maria Balshaw, director of the Whitworth Art Gallery in Manchester, and Vaughan Allen, chief executive of Urbis. The discussion launches the Manchester Museums at Night weekend.
Museums at Night Weekend, museums and galleries across the UK
16-18 May
More than 80 museums including the Bowes Museum in Barnard Castle, and the Scottish Fisheries Museum in Anstruther, will show twilight screenings of Nick Park's The Wrong Trousers and episodes of Shaun the Sheep by Aardman Animations. Other after-dark events include sleepovers at the Science Museum in London and the Museum of English Rural Life in Reading and a comedy night at Manchester's Museum of Science and Industry.
Meet the Mummies, Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery
17 May
An opportunity to see behind the scenes in the museum's conservation studios and explore Egyptian mummies out of their cases as they are prepared for display. Curators will be on hand to discuss how the Egyptians lived. Family activities will include the Stop the Rot trail.
Family Learning Day, Newport Museum and Art Gallery
24 May
Activities enabling visitors to discover more about medieval Newport will focus on objects from the museum's archaeology, social history and natural history collections.

Show Scotland Museums and Galleries Big Events Weekend
2-5 May
A wide range of one-off events will be held across Scotland, including a Monster Pop Art day at Stranraer Museum on 3 May, when visitors can recreate beasts from the prehistoric Permian period in a pop art style. Classic films with a Scottish theme will be screened at the Linthouse Engine Shop at the Scottish Maritime Museum in Irvine on 2-3 May.
