Somerset House has created a temporary exhibition space to fill the void left by the Gilbert Collection's switch to the Victoria and Albert Museum.
The first exhibition at the Embankment Galleries, Skin+Bones, a fashion and architecture show developed by Los Angeles' Museum of Contemporary Art, will run from 24 April-10 August.
The London landmark was recently hit by the double blow of the closure of the Gilbert Collection and the Hermitage Rooms (Museums Journal November 2007, p5).
Gwyn Miles, director of Somerset House, is expected to reveal plans for the venue later this month, including future exhibitions at the Embankment Galleries and the redevelopment of other areas. The Courtauld Institute of Art, which occupies Somerset House's north wing, is monitoring events.
Director Deborah Swallow said: "It is all evolving and we are talking a huge amount about the future."
