The Watts Gallery in Surrey is to auction two paintings after failing to find a publicly-owned museum that wanted to buy them.
The gallery decided to sell the paintings, by Albert Moore and Edward Burne-Jones, after the recent change to the Museums Association's (MA) ethical guidelines, which now allows sales in "exceptional circumstances". The Watts said it needs the money to secure the future of its collection.
News of the Watts' sale comes as the MA launches its disposal toolkit.
Vanessa Trevelyan, convener of the MA's ethics committee, said: "The disposal toolkit is for those nervous of pitfalls who fear they might make mistakes."
