Gwynedd Museum and Art Gallery, the oldest in north Wales, is threatened with closure as part of major cuts by Gwynedd County Council.
The council took over the responsibility for running the museum in 1982 from Bangor University, which owns the building and most of the artefacts. But the council faces a funding shortfall of £4m-£5m in 2008-09 after a poor settlement from the Welsh Assembly Government for 2005-06 to 2010-11.
"It is expected that the council's Lifelong Learning Service, [which runs the museum], must deliver about £1m of savings over the next three years," said Rhys Wyn Parri, head of Gwynedd Lifelong Learning Service.
