Speaking just two days into her South Bank job, Kelly told Museums Journal she was delighted with the appointment. 'It's one of the most important challenges you could have this century.'

Kelly's new job title -artistic director - leaves her in charge of the programming in the Royal Festival Hall, the Queen Elizabeth Hall and the Hayward Gallery. She said the job would mean she could 'design the artistic vision of the centre'.

Asked about fears that the Olympics would mean lottery funding being diverted from heritage into sport, she said there was a huge commitment from organisations and funders to culture and that it had been fundamental to winning the Olympic bid.

The cultural Olympiad starts in 2008 at the end of the Beijing games. The centrepiece of the cultural bid was the idea of a 'FriendShip' - an ocean-going clipper that will sail around the world from 2008 to 2012 with a 'cultural cargo' on board.

Kelly will be speaking at the Museums Association's annual conference this month about the power of art and museums.
