Seven Monument Fellowships have been awarded under the Museums Association's scheme to pass on collections knowledge.
Manchester City Galleries, two branches of Tyne and Wear Museums, Fermanagh County Museum, Saffron Walden Museum, Dumfries Museum and the National Railway Museum will all work with the new fellows.
Carolyn Wingfield, curator at Saffron Walden Museum, made an application with Len Pole, formerly the curator of ethnography at the Royal Albert Memorial Museum in Exeter, to allow him to help staff at Saffron Walden get to grips with its "small but internationally important" ethnography collection.
Wingfield said staff at the museum were happy to be among the first to take part in the project and hoped their experiences would encourage similar work.
Pole, who worked at Saffron Walden for more than 20 years, said that as well as passing on his knowledge to staff at the museum, he hoped to share his expertise with other museums in the region with ethnographic collections.
Lucy Shaw, the Museums Association's Diversify coordinator, said: "The applicants demonstrated well-thought-out proposals for transferring collections-based knowledge.
"Several of the proposed ideas for capturing information will be of benefit to the wider profession, and we will be sharing them through a series of master classes next year."
