Plans were unveiled last month for the new design of the Turner Contemporary in Margate. Architect David Chipperfield, who had just won the RIBA Stirling Prize for Architecture for the Museum of Literature in Marbach am Neckar, Germany, said he was happy that it fitted into the dramatic setting of the pier.

The design is the second incarnation of the gallery. The original plan was scrapped when costs escalated from £7m to nearly £50m. The building will include gallery and studio space, as well as a cafe and terraces with views out to sea and over the town. The gallery is scheduled to open in 2010.
