That's a lot to olé about (unless you're an Arsenal fan). The Emya judges praised the way the Cosmo Caixa combines intelligent displays with good looks.

'Beauty has been forgotten by many museums, although it should be at the centre of modern museological thinking,' they said. Visitors can discover collections and scientific phenomena, as well as experience environments such as a 'real' Amazonian forest - home to more than 50 different animals, including alligators.

The Micheletti Award for the best science and industry museum went to another science centre - Tom Tit's Experiment in Södertälje near Stockholm. The Swedish museum is named after a children's book, written in the late-19th century by a Frenchman, and it boasts its own nursery school, with a waiting list.

Speaking at the award ceremony, Massimo Negri, the director of the European Museum Forum, which organises Emya, said that each year it becomes harder for the judges, who visit all the entrants, to pick the winners. 'Basic museologial competence is such that many museums are competing at the same level,' he said.

That said, they decided that Inatura, a natural history museum in Dornbirn, Austria, where you are likely to meet dramatically posed stuffed animals on the stairs, deserved a special commendation for its mix of scholarship and showmanship.

ARoS, a Danish art gallery transformed from a regional into an international destination attracting more than 1 million visitors a year, and the refurbished National Museum of Iceland in Reykjavik were also specially commended by the judges. London's Churchill Museum, which is part of the Cabinet War Rooms, won the Council of Europe prize, as recommended by the European Museum Forum, in April.
