Bury Metropolitan Borough Council has been barred from membership of the Museums Association (MA) and removed from the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council's (MLA) accreditation scheme because it sold a painting from its collection.

A Riverbank by LS Lowry, which was in the collection of the Bury Art Gallery and Museum, was sold at auction at the end of last year for £1.25m to help plug the council's budget deficit.

Mark Taylor, the director of the MA, said: 'The council has demonstrated a complete disregard for its responsibility to care for and preserve Bury's cultural heritage.'

The museum and art gallery has also had its accredited status removed by the MLA. The decision was taken on the grounds that the standards for disposal of items from the collection were no longer met.

The removal of accredited status could have severe implications for any future funding applications by the museum. Chris Batt, the chief executive of the MLA, said it 'not only affects the future funding for the museum but creates a cultural deficit for the people of Bury'.
