BM hosts a Wikipedian
Tie-up aims to foster links with Wikipedia
The British Museum is hosting its first volunteer Wikipedian-in-residence.
Liam Wyatt is at the museum for five weeks, and last month oversaw an open day for about 40 Wikipedians to work with curators on new articles that catalogue objects in the museum’s collection.
Mindful of the recent controversy over copyrighted pictures belonging to the National Portrait Gallery being uploaded to Wikipedia, he hopes his residency will improve relations between Wikipedians and the cultural sector.
Wyatt is avoiding politically controversial objects such as the Parthenon Marbles. His focus is on improving the text and academic links on articles about objects in the British Museum on Wikipedia pages.
