The Natural Sciences Collections Association (Natsca) is a UK-based Subject Specialist Network that promotes and supports natural sciences collections, the institutions that house them and the people that work with them. We aim to improve collections care, understanding and accessibility for all.
Natural sciences collections provide invaluable insights into the natural world and serve as critical resources for research, engagement and learning. Their significance extends far beyond museum walls, providing insights into societal challenges, from climate change to decolonial practice.
Important issues include exploring how collections can positively contribute to addressing climate change and biodiversity loss. With the development of the Distributed System of Scientific Collections UK, many institutions are looking to digitise their holdings to improve access for research and innovation.
There is also growing attention on the ethical implications of collecting practices, particularly regarding the acquisition of specimens through colonial exploitation. And colleagues continue to face challenges in securing funding, retaining staff and maintaining resources for collection management.
