London Museum sounds out DJs to join late-night collective

London Museum is looking for emerging DJs to play its regular late-night opening hours when it opens at Smithfield later this year on 28 November.

Created in collaboration with the chicken shop Morley’s, the Sound of London DJ Collective will bring together 12 DJs for paid performance opportunities during the museum’s extended opening hours every Friday and Saturday night until 11pm.

The museum is seeking musicians living or working in London of all ages, genres and influences. The collective is intended to reflect the rich tapestry of London’s sounds and creative scene.

DJ applications are open until 14 August.

The DJs will be selected by the museum and Morley’s alongside special guest judges, and will also be supported by the DJ, MC and club promoter Papa Face, who is a mainstay of reggae, dub and sound system culture.

The DJs will perform in one of the museum’s new spaces, Our Time – a social space that aims to reimagine the former trading floor of the historic Victorian General Market as a vibrant gathering place where the museum’s collections and London’s communities unite.

Our Time will have 13 large-scale installations around the perimeter. One of these displays is called Hanging Out, and will feature signs from places where Londoners gather, including the sign from the original Morley’s shop in Sydenham, as well as the Fabric nightclub sign.

The DJ collective will inhabit and remix the space, taking it from a daytime destination to an evening venue. From this central meeting point, visitors can descend into the museum’s subterranean permanent galleries or visit the restaurant, bar or cafe.

The DJ Collective is open to all applicants who are 18 or older at the time of applying. Applicants must live or work in one of London’s 32 boroughs or in the City of London to be eligible.
