Explosion! The Museum of Naval Firepower has been taken over by the National Museum of the Royal Navy in Portsmouth.

Nick Hewitt, a curator at Explosion!, which is at Priddy’s Hard in Gosport, said he was “thrilled” about the prospect of being part of the bigger organisation.

“Being part of a larger group means we have more influence and profile,” he said. “We are already seeing the benefits in terms of loans.”

Hewitt added that there had so far been no impact on staff as a result of the takeover, and that there would be no change to the public offer.

A spokeswoman for the National Museum of the Royal Navy said Explosion! would benefit from its “extensive experience in the visitor attraction arena and from being part of a national organisation”.

Explosion! was owned and operated by Portsmouth Naval Base Property Trust, a property-development agency that manages historic buildings in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. A waterbus service links Explosion! to the Portsmouth dockyard.
