The Riverside Museum in Glasgow was named European Museum of the Year last month.
The judging panel said the museum demonstrated how a specialist transport collection could renew its relevance through “active engagement with wider social and universal issues”.
The judges agreed unanimously that the museum fulfilled the award’s criteria of public quality at the highest level.
The Riverside Museum opened in June 2011 and has since attracted more than two million visitors.
The museum’s manager, Lawrence Fitzgerald, said that everyone who had worked to make Riverside a success should feel proud.
He said: “We were up against national museums in Edinburgh and Liverpool, and major museums in France, Italy and elsewhere.
“Glasgow’s story is about its people, and I’m delighted that our team has been recognised as the best at telling that story to our audiences – and the best in Europe.”
Other award winners included the Museum of Liverpool, which secured the Council of Europe Museum Prize. The Kenneth Hudson Award was won by Batalha’s Municipal Community Museum, Damão e Diu, in Batalha, Portugal, while the MAS Museum aan de Stroom, in Antwerp, Belgium, scooped the Silletto Award.
