Clydebuilt in Braehead will close this month as Capital Shopping Centres goes ahead with plans to sell the building that houses the museum and cease its £100,000 subsidy to the Scottish Maritime Museum (SMM) for running it.
SMM director Jim Tildesley said the museum’s contents would be absorbed into the main maritime collection, while the one full-time and three part-time posts would be made redundant.
The SMM will have to meet some £20,000 per year that it took from the subsidy for curatorial time and collections management. “The owners put the situation down to financial conditions,” said Tildesley.
“It may be indicative of how difficult support from the private sector is going to be over the coming years.”
