The Wolfson Foundation has more than doubled the money that it gives to the Art Fund.
The charitable foundation, which gives other support to museums and galleries, has increased its grant from £200,000 to £500,000 a year for the next three years.
"We are very grateful," said David Barrie, the director of the Art Fund. "The Wolfson Foundation has done so much for museums and gallerie over the generations, and is by far and away the largest regular trust supporter of the Art Fund."
All the money will go towards new acquisitions and is allocated retrospectively.
At the end of each financial year, the foundation can choose the objects that the Art Fund helped to acquire with which it wants to be associated.
