The future of Museums and Galleries Month (MGM) is in jeopardy after its main funder slashed its grant for next year. The Museums, Libraries and Archives Council (MLA) has scrapped its £65,000 grant to the Campaign for Museums, which runs the event.

Roy Clare, chief executive of the MLA, said it didn't have any plans to fund the month beyond this year. "MGM has done some great work, the best of which should be sustainable without the prop of ongoing funding from the MLA," he said. "We have offered extra one-off funding more fitting with our long-term role, to facilitate discussions as to how the celebration of museums and galleries becomes a year-round activity."

Campaign for Museums trustees will announce the future of MGM next month.

Nikola Burdon, policy officer at the Museums Association said: "It is more than 10 years since Museums and Galleries Week [followed by MGM] was launched, and it feels time for a fresh approach that builds on its strengths."
