Funding for cultural coordinators who work to facilitate arts and cultural heritage visits and events for schools in Scotland will be phased out by 2010.

The scheme was launched by the Scottish Executive in 2002 and is administered by the Scottish Arts Council. Last year, more than 100 coordinators were employed to make the link between schools and the cultural heritage sector.

But culture minister Linda Fabiani said it was unclear how many of the coordinators had previously held similar posts with local authorities, and that there had been no assessment of provision to find out where the gaps were.
