The New Art Gallery Walsall will close on Mondays from November.

Stephen Snoddy, the gallery’s director, said the closure would save about £30,000 and was one of several measures designed to reduce costs.

He added that the gallery had made £78,000 worth of cuts this year and that additional cuts were likely next year as the arts council and the local authority passed on cuts in their budgets.

The gallery has enjoyed a steady increase in attendance from just over 100,000 in 2006 to more than 200,000 in 2009.

But Snoddy said closing one day a week would have an impact on attendance figures and income. Seven-day opening was introduced in September 2008.
