Andrew Carnegie Birthplace Museum named UK’s most family-friendly museum

Free attraction is the first Scottish venue to win the award
The Andrew Carnegie Birthplace Museum in Dumfermline is the first Scottish winner of the annual Family Friendly Museum Award, run by the charity Kids in Museums.
The museum beat competition from 14 other venues to be named the UK’s best heritage attraction for families. It also won the Small Museum category before going on to clinch the overall award.
“We are absolutely delighted to receive the award! We are a small museum with a handful of staff and an annual budget of £1,000 for family events,” said Kirke Kook, curator and manager of the Andrew Carnegie Birthplace Museum.
“Our aim is to make everyone’s visit interesting and fun every single day, and to be recognised for this at a national level is incredible. Our visitors often say that coming to our museum feels like coming home and we hope they continue to feel this way.”
The Family Friendly Museum Award is the only award for UK museums that is judged by families, and is presented to cultural sites that go the extra mile to provide a great experience for the whole family.
Over 800 museums were nominated by the public, and undercover family judges helped select the final winners.
“I’m thrilled to see the first Scottish winner of the Family Friendly Museum Award, particularly in the award’s biggest year yet,” said Emmajane Avery, chair of Kids in Museums.
“This success is an excellent illustration of how museums, regardless of their size or budget, can provide a great experience for families.”
The Andrew Carnegie Birthplace Museum explores the legacy of Andrew Carnegie, who went from humble beginnings in Dunfermline to becoming the richest man in the world and the father of modern philanthropy.
Undercover family judges praised the small museum for its welcoming staff, family zones, year-round programme of activities, sensory backpacks, hands-on exhibits and great facilities.
The museum succeeds last year’s winner, Leeds City Museum, which earlier this year celebrated its highest ever visitor figures.
