Tullie House Museum in Carlisle has won the Telegraph Family Friendly Museum Award 2015.

The museum, which houses contemporary and pre-Raphaelite art, and exhibitions on Roman history and local history and wildlife, was chosen by volunteer families from six shortlisted museums to win the award.

“Six shortlisted museums were road-tested by undercover families against the 20 points on the Kids in Museums Manifesto. Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery shone through as the most welcoming on all counts, from the temporary exhibitions to the toilets,” said a statement on the Kids In Museums website.

The Winding House in Caerphilly, Wales, was given a special commendation for outstanding contribution to its local community, awarded in recognition of the testimonies local families gave to their museum, saying how much it meant to them.

The shortlisted museums were The Diving Museum, Gosport, Hampshire; The Geffrye, Museum of the Home, London; National Coal Mining Museum for England, Wakefield, West Yorkshire; Royal Albert Memorial Museum, Exeter, Devon; Tullie House Museum & Art Gallery, Carlisle, Cumbria; and The Winding House, Caerphilly, Wales.
