The project fig-futures, supported by the charity Art Fund and Outset Contemporary Art Fund, aims to explore new ideas and spaces for displaying artwork.
Participating museums and galleries will be allocated a budget to host weekly exhibition openings and events to promote their shows.
fig-2 project manager Yves Blais said that the Art Fund and Outset's involvement will allow new artwork to be displayed in public collections and reach new audiences, to "benefit as many people as possible for generations to come".
"I am thrilled to have the chance to work alongside institutions around the country, to see a future legacy take shape for both fig-2 and its artists," he said.
Blais and Art Fund staff will provide partners with guidance and support in the following areas: selecting artists; creating, transporting and installing artwork; and promoting exhibitions to local and national audiences.
Initiated in 2000 by Mark Francis, director of London’s Gagosian Gallery, and Jay Jopling, founder of White Cube Gallery, fig-1 presented 50 exhibitions in 50 weeks at an independent space.
In 2015, fig-2, an extension of fig-1, was realised at the Institute of Contemporary Arts Studio, where London-based art critic Fatoş Üstek curated 50 exhibitions in 50 weeks.
fig-2 will be applying to Arts Council England for fig-futures funding in early 2017.
