Canterbury reprieve

Canterbury City Council has decided not to close the Roman Museum, West Gate Towers and Herne Bay Museum, following a public campaign to keep them open. The running of West Gate Towers has been leased to a private operator, while there will be a revised charging structure at the other museums.

Citizenship conference

A resolution presented to the European Citizenship conference last month called for barriers to museum collections for visually impaired people to be removed, and for governments to take the cultural rights of disabled people more seriously. The resolution was originally passed at the In Touch with Art conference held at the Victoria and Albert Museum in October.

Funding for St Fagans

Amgueddfa Cymru’s (National Museum Wales) plans to redevelop St Fagans: National History Museum (above) have been boosted by an extra £1m in funding from the Welsh government.  National Museum Wales is compiling a second-stage application for £8.7m from the Heritage Lottery Fund towards the £20.8m project.

Bromley Museum plan

Bromley Borough Council has approved a plan to make a bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund to extend the Bromley Museum, in Orpington. The aim is to expand the museum into an area of the vacant library building. The £3m project includes plans to repair the Grade II*-listed building, improve exhibition spaces and create better learning facilities.
