Cultural learning plan
The Culture and Learning Consortium has made 10 recommendations to the government calling on it to make cultural learning a key element within the national curriculum. The consortium recommends that a Cultural Learning Alliance be established for a three-year period to help develop a national strategy.
MLA funds apprentices
The Museums, Libraries and Archives Council (MLA) has committed £500,000 in new funding for 50 Creative Apprenticeships in English museums, to increase entry into the sector and encourage diversity. The MLA is also offering bursaries to fund foundation degrees for up to 20 people already working in the industry.
New RAF exhibition
A new permanent exhibition at the Royal Air Force Museum Cosford celebrates the contribution of ethnic minority servicemen and women to the Royal Air Force. Diversity in the Royal Air Force will focus on pioneering figures such as Larry Osbourne, who signed up in 1943, becoming the first African-Caribbean officer to reach the rank of group captain. Pictured is H Earl's An Airman from Nigeria (1944).
Art tool-kit for patients
The National Portrait Gallery has produced a tool-kit covering art education for young hospital patients. The project, entitled Working with Hospital Schools, follows a 12-month partnership with four locations to accompany the gallery's Pop Art Portraits exhibition. The kit can be downloaded from the gallery's website.
