Dundee is ahead of Blackpool in a bid to host the first Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) satellite outside the capital.

The two locations are examining the viability of new museums to house part of the V&A's collection.

A spokeswoman for the museum said: "We won't be funding it or running it, but we will provide content."

The Dundee plan envisages a 2011 start, but Blackpool is still at the discussion stage. The V&A spokeswoman said neither location had been given preference. Dundee's plans are part of a 30-year docks regeneration project.

Consultants Whetstone Group published a 78-page Stage Two document before Christmas outlining the project.

The 560 sq m museum, costing £42m, would be sited by the Discovery Point heritage site near a new hotel and dock development.

A two-day summit to discuss proposals begins at Dundee University on 24 February. It is envisaged that the new museum will celebrate the city's association with art and design industries, including digital media and comics publisher DC Thomson.

Funds are being sought from the Heritage Lottery Fund as well as public sources.

Dundee City Council's arts and heritage manager John Stewart-Young said the city had a track record of building arts facilities, such as the £8.5m renovation of the McManus Galleries.

A Blackpool council spokeswoman said plans were still at an early stage. "We are right at the beginning of the process," she said. "We won't have an update until March, when we will have the outcome of a feasibility study."
