Catering survey results

Research commissioned by MLA London has shown that catering facilities at most museums, libraries, archives and heritage sites in London have a turnover of less than £50,000 a year, with almost 40 per cent not making any profit from their operations. Only 37 per cent of the 230 attractions canvassed offered catering facilities.

Gay-history site launched

An online museum devoted to gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender history and culture has been launched. The site, at www.proudheritage.org, has sections on historically significant figures and personal memories.

MLA rewards collections

The DH Lawrence Collection at the University of Nottingham, the Silver Studio Collection at Middlesex University (above) and Durham University Oriental Museum's Egyptian Collection have been awarded Designated status by the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council. The Designation scheme recognises collections that are "of outstanding national and international importance".

Demos tackles learning

The thinktank Demos has published a consultation paper, Culture and Learning: Towards a New Agenda, which addresses issues such as entitlement, impact assessment and leadership. The consultation, written by visiting professor in cultural policy at City University, John Holden, was commissioned by a consortium of funding agencies including the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and the Paul Hamlyn Foundation.
