How volunteers add value
OnFife is a cultural charity and manages and operates theatres, libraries, museums and galleries, archives and collections on behalf of Fife Council.
Susan Hannah has been part of OnFife’s Sewing Circle for over 20 years, using her textile and craft skills to help bring our museums to life. The group makes children’s costumes and puppets, supports conservation work, and even helps design pantomime costumes.
“Volunteering is like-minded people pooling their time and talents for the greater good.”
Susan joined our volunteer programme after spotting a poster and hasn’t looked back. She enjoys meeting new people and working collaboratively with museum staff. “The curators value our input, it’s truly collaborative.”
Sewing Circle volunteers have contributed to projects across OnFife, from nature-themed costumes (Susan made a woodpecker) to hat restoration, where Susan supported a royal milliner.
For Susan, volunteering is both creative and rewarding: “You think, how will I do this? But you always find a way and surprise yourself.”
She encourages others to get involved: “It’s rewarding, sociable, and supported by staff who help you make a meaningful contribution. I’ve gained so much and still look forward to every session.”
