Scottish national strategy launched

Six aims set strategic direction for the sector
Culture secretary Fiona Hyslop has today unveiled the national strategy for Scotland’s museums and galleries, which sets the strategic direction for the sector and informs the business plan for a new national development body.

Going Further: The National Strategy for Scotland’s Museums and Galleries promotes a shared vision by highlighting “forward-thinking projects” that illustrate how the aims can be achieved.

Joanne Orr, chief executive officer at Museums Galleries Scotland, the new national development body, said: “The strategy is essentially about encouraging the sector, harnessing the power of their considerable ambition and enterprising spirit, changing how we work for greater public value and benefit.

“It is about maximising the potential of Scotland’s unique museum collections, empowering the workforce through skills development and developing a more global perspective through our collections and culture.”

The strategy includes six aims for the sector. These are: maximising the potential of collections and culture; strengthening connections between museums, people and places; empowering a diverse workforce; forging a sustainable future; fostering a culture of collaboration; and developing a global perspective.

Each aim is accompanied by a number of objectives and case studies illustrating how the aim can be achieved in practice.

Fiona Ballantyne, chair of the Museum Strategy Group and of Museums Galleries Scotland, said: “This strategy has been born out of a year of intensive dialogue with and among sector and partner organisations, which allows us to set out together with a very strong sense of purpose and future direction.”

A series of roadshows will be held early this summer where museums can discuss the strategy and contribute to the development of a strategy delivery plan.
