John Orna-Ornstein to leave Arts Council England

Director of museums to join National Trust
John Orna-Ornstein is to step down as the director of museums at Arts Council England (ACE) to take up a newly created position at the National Trust.

He will join the conservation charity’s executive board in June as its director of curation and experience.

The role, which was advertised at the end of last year, is charged with creating and delivering “historically accurate, emotionally rewarding and intellectually stimulating experiences”. The National Trust has more than 500 historic houses, castles, ancient monuments gardens and parks and nature reserves.

Hedley Swain, ACE’s area director of the south east, will lead the arts council’s work on museums – including the integration of Major Partner Museums into its National Portfolio funding programme from 2018 – until a replacement for Orna-Ornstein is appointed.

“[Orna-Ornstein] has made a very significant contribution to our museums work during his time at the arts council and will no doubt be a great asset to the National Trust,” ACE said in a statement.
