ACE announces Artsmark educators

Trinity College London to run scheme from September
More than 1,500 schools and other education providers across England have been awarded an Artsmark status to recognise the high quality of their arts and cultural provision to pupils.

This is the first application round since the programme was re-launched last September to include further education colleges and youth justice settings.

Arts Council England (ACE), which runs the programme, said Artsmark now has a greater focus on the quality of arts provision as well as the quantity.

Alan Davey, chief executive of ACE, said: “The arts council has a long history of involvement in arts education and it’s great to see schemes like Artsmark becoming an integral part of more and more school curriculums.

“We took some time last year to review Artsmark and listen to what schools and our other partners had to say about the programme and how we can improve it. The high number of applications from schools and other educational settings clearly illustrates how well received these changes were.”

Other changes include the introduction of two award distinctions, Artsmark and Artsmark Gold.

Education providers that don’t achieve the Artsmark status will now be referred to as “working towards Artsmark”, which ACE said will support the programme’s evolution into an auditing and development tool as well as a mark of quality.

Trinity College London, which provides the Arts Award, will become responsible for the delivery of Artsmark from September. However ACE will retain the intellectual property of the Artsmark programme and continue to manage the strategic development of the programme.
