Do Icom’s Blue Shield statements help protect heritage under threat?

Vote in the poll and have your say
Following civil conflict in Ukraine, the International Council of Museums (Icom) has issued a Blue Shield statement calling for the protection of the country’s cultural and historical heritage, as well as the institutions that house them and the people that care for them.

The Blue Shield is the symbol used to identify cultural sites protected by the 1954 Hague Convention.

In its latest statement, Icom warns that Ukraine’s museums and other cultural institutions are at risk of looting and destruction. It also calls on the Ukrainian government to investigate an incident in the Kiev History Museum’s storage rooms in February and to allocate protected storage space for particularly threatened collections.

Other recent Icom statements address damage to museums and heritage sites in Egypt and Syria.
