ACE reveals capital funding applicants

York Museums Trust and Tate St Ives among the successful applicants
York Museums Trust and Tate St Ives are among the 26 organisations that have been successful in the first stage of the application process for Arts Council England’s (ACE) new capital funding programme.

ACE plans to invest £114m in the refurbishment or extension of existing arts buildings in the first round of this funding programme. The 26 successful applicants will now be invited to complete a stage two application within the next 18 months showing plans at a detailed stage of design and development.

If approved, York Museums Trust will use its proposed award of £3.5m to create new gallery space at York Art Gallery within the existing building’s footprint. The increased gallery space will be used to display contemporary and modern visual arts and house the new Centre for British Studio Ceramics.

Tate St Ives has applied for £4m from the programme to extend its gallery facilities.

Other successful applicants include the Serpentine Gallery in London, which wants to use £750,000 to make its public spaces more interactive using digital technology; the National Glass Centre, Sunderland, which will use £847,500 to modernise its facilities, refurbish education spaces and improve the centre's environmental sustainability; and Embrace Arts (The Richard Attenborough Centre) at the University of Leicester, which has applied for £600,000 to extend existing gallery space and increase access for disabled people.

Alan Davey, chief executive of ACE, said: “ACE hasn't run a capital programme since 2003 so we knew there was a real need to maintain and improve our existing arts and cultural buildings.

"That's why we've prioritised renovations and refurbishments across the country that deliver sustainability and resilience and ensure organisations have the right facilities and equipment to support and deliver their excellent work.”

The next round of the capital funding programme will open in the summer.
