BBC backs the arts
Broadcaster's director-general announces a raft of new initiatives
Museums and galleries will be at the heart of the BBC’s plan to improve and expand its arts coverage.
In a speech earlier this week, BBC director-general Tony Hall announced “the biggest push we’ve made in the arts for a generation”, and promised that there would be “more arts on the BBC than ever before”.
The line-up will kick off with coverage of the Museums at Night festival (15-17 May).
There will be broadcasts from museums and galleries across England, Wales and Scotland with BBC Arts Editor Will Gompertz presenting an hour-long programme on BBC Two.
The BBC also announced that it would cover the Royal Academy’s Summer Exhibition, Liverpool Biennial, Manchester International Festival as well as the work of the National Galleries of Scotland and the British Museum.
Hall also revealed the names of some senior arts figures who will advise the BBC. These include Tate director Nicholas Serota and Alex Poots, the director of the Manchester International Festival.
Digital arts output will become increasingly important for the BBC. The Space, an online digital platform that the BBC runs with Arts Council England, will be relaunched in the summer under the leadership of Ruth MacKenzie, the former director of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad.
