UK tops Europe in TripAdvisor museum awards

More winning museums in Britain than any other European country
Seven of Europe’s best-rated 25 museums are in the UK, according to TripAdvisor’s Travellers’ Choice awards for Museums.

This gives UK more winning museums than any other European country, although the top three European museums were in Russia, Spain and France (State Hermitage Museum and Winter Palace, St Petersburg; Musee d'Orsay, Paris; and Museo Nacional del Prado, Madrid).

London’s British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum take fourth and seventh place respectively in Europe. The National Gallery, Natural History Museum and Churchill War Rooms, all also in London, are 13th, 14th and 15th respectively.

The National Railway Museum in York is in 20th place while the National Museum of Scotland, Edinburgh, is 24th.

Award winners were determined using an algorithm that took into account the quantity and quality of reviews and ratings for museums worldwide, gathered over a 12-month period.

A newcomer to TripAdvisor’s Travellers’ Choice top ten in the UK is York Castle Museum, which takes tenth place.

Other UK winners this year include Titanic Belfast and Glasgow’s Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, which take eighth and ninth place in the UK respectively.

New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, came top out of museums worldwide, followed by Art Institute of Chicago and then the State Hermitage Museum and Winter Palace in St Petersburg.
