Hans-Martin Hinz has been re-elected for a second term as president of the International Council of Museums (ICOM) following a vote at the ICOM conference in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, last month.

Making his acceptance speech he said: “In presenting ourselves to the wider public we must continue to increase the awareness of [museum-related] issues and highlight the significance of museums as sites of social encounter.”

Prior to joining ICOM Hinz was a member of the management team at the German Historical Museum in Berlin, and from 2000 to 2001 held the position of deputy minister of culture for Berlin.

The presidency is a three-year term, chairing an executive council of 14 other members, also elected last week. George Okello Abungu (Kenya) and Teresa Scheiner (Brazil) were elected joint vice presidents, and Anne-Catherine Hauglustaine-Robert (France) was elected Treasurer.

The other elected members were: Ossama Abdel-Meguid (Egypt), Laishun An (China), In-kyung Chang (Republic of Korea), Luisa de Peña Díaz (Dominican Republic), Willem De Vos (Belgium), Alberto Garlandini (Italy), Goranka Horjan (Croatia), Peter Keller (Austria), Diana Pardue (US), Regine Schulz (Germany), and Merete Ipsen (Denmark).

One of the executive committee’s first tasks will be to appoint a new director general following the dismissal of Julien Anfruns and ICOM’s director for administration and finance, Lydie Spaczynski, earlier this year.

Spaczynski is contesting her dismissal and has referred the case to the French employment arbitration court. The procedure is ongoing. Museums Journal was unable to contact Anfruns for comment.

The next ICOM General Conference will take place in 2016 in Milan, Italy.
