Digital dilemmas tackled at Liverpool 2013

The impact of information democratisation on audience participation
The role digital technology can play in audience participation was one of the key subjects tackled at a session held yesterday at the Museums Association conference in Liverpool.

Digital Democracy saw three experts discuss the impact of technology-based exhibits on participation in the past, present and future.

Ross Parry, senior lecturer at the University of Leicester's School of Museum Studies, argued that museums have always used technology to encourage participation.

John Ferry, digital and new media manager at Glasgow Museums, told delegates how digital technology has been used the Riverside Museum in Glasgow.

Much of the work has been done in-house so Glasgow Museums retains this expertise, which can then be transferred to future projects.

The final speaker was Jussi Ängeslevä, vice-creative director, at Art+Com and a professor at the University of Arts in Berlin.

He discussed how technology does not have to mean screens and how some digital devices can become “content graves” if they feature so much information that visitors find them difficult to use and navigate.

A full summary of the Digital Democracy session will soon be available at this link.
