Latest Museums Journal out now

Catch up with the latest news, opinion and practice in the museum sector
The January 2015 issue of Museums Journal is out now in print and online.

This month’s jam-packed issue includes features on the future of rural life museums, the important work trustees do for the sector and a profile of Simon Wallis, the director of the Hepworth Wakefield.

For this month’s reviews, MJ takes a look at the new Staffordshire Hoard Gallery at Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery, the recent makeover of the world war two codebreaking site Bletchley Park and Trainspotting, a temporary exhibition on the much-misunderstood hobby of trainspotting currently on show at the National Railway Museum in York.

Our news analysis section explores the devastating impact that four years of cuts have had on the museum sector, the benefits of endowment funds and the uncertain future awaiting culture in Northern Ireland. We also take a look at the English government’s recently announced plans to invest in culture in northern England and Creative Scotland’s decision to boost funding for the visual arts.

In this month’s comment, Jocelyn Dodd gives her thoughts on the health and wellbeing agenda, Skinder Hundal urges the arts sector to take a more long-term, strategic approach to diversity, and Sybil Williams and Janice Lane discuss how communities can affect decision-making in museums.

Finally, in our people section we speak to Pieta Greaves, the conservation manager of the Staffordshire Hoard, about her ongoing work on the famous collection of Anglo-Saxon treasure, while Louise Eaton tells us why she volunteers at the Mary Rose Trust and Amy Barker talks us through her research on first world war art in relation to mental health.
