Winner of Artes Mundi 5 announced

Teresa Margolles wins £40,000 prize
Teresa Margolles has been announced as the winner of the Artes Mundi 5 international art prize.

Margolles was chosen from a shortlist of seven for the £40,000 prize, which is the largest cash prize for the arts in the UK.

Curator and broadcaster Tim Marlow was the chair of the judges. He said he was struck by power of her work in confronting “an on-going human tragedy”.

Margolles, who is from Mexico, focuses on social experience in particular drug-related crime and violence. Death was a major theme in both works chosen for Artes Mundi. In one of her works on display at National Museum Wales the artist uses tiles from the floor of the studio where Luis Miguel Suro, a friend and promising young artist, was murdered in Guadalajara, Mexico

Announcing the winner Marlow added that he wished the government in England was as supportive of the arts as the Welsh government.

First minister of Wales Carwyn Jones congratulated Margolles and said the competition was going from strength to strength: “It is a great privilege to be able to host the event in Wales and it plays a major role in our nation's vibrant cultural scene.”

The Derek Williams Trust Purchase Award of £30,000, to acquire a work by one of the shortlisted artists for National Museum Wales, went to Tania Bruguera for Displacement, 1998-99.

It was also announced that Mathew Prichard will be the next chairman of the Artes Mundi board. He takes over from William Wilkin, the prize’s founding chair.

Artistic director Ben Borthwick’s is also stepping down from the prize to pursue international curatorial projects.

The Artes Mundi 5 Exhibition runs until 13 January 2013 at National Museum Wales, Cardiff.
