Has the Turner Prize had its day?

Vote in the poll and have your say
This year is the 30th Turner Prize, which was founded in 1984 to promote discussion of new developments in contemporary British art.

Duncan Campbell, Ciara Phillips, James Richards and Tris Vonna-Michell have been shortlisted for the 2014 prize, with the winner announced live on Channel 4 on 1 December.

Over its 30-year history the prize has been awarded to the likes of Gilbert & George, Richard Long, Anish Kapoor and Rachel Whiteread.

It has a reputation for controversy, with exhibits such as Damien Hirst’s shark in formaldehyde and Tracey Emin’s My Bed. In 1997 Emin walked out of a live broadcast while in 2001 Madonna swore while presenting the prize.

While the Turner Prize is often praised for bringing new audiences into galleries and supporting contemporary artists, it has also been criticised for following a tired format and for favouring conceptual artworks.
