Investment to kickstart development of purpose-built gallery
The Treasury has announced an £800,000 investment for the Museum of Science and Industry (Mosi) in Manchester to kickstart the development of a purpose-built temporary exhibition space.

The investment, which was allocated to Mosi by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport as capital funding, was announced by the chancellor George Osborne last week during a visit to Manchester.

It will enable the museum, which is part of the Science Museum Group, to start the design and planning phases of its expansion.

The new gallery will be housed in a 19th-century building, which was the first railway goods warehouse in the world. The internal space will be opened up to create a double height 500m square gallery.

The museum told Museums Journal that the project will cost about £3m. It is hoped that the location of the gallery on the eastern side of the museum will encourage visitors to fully explore the 7.5 acre site.

Jean Franczyk, the director of Mosi, said further fundraising would be needed and the museum will begin discussions with potential donors.

She added: “This financial support could not be offered at a more important time. By enabling the museum to host world-class exhibitions, this financial investment will have a huge positive, cultural impact on Manchester and the region as a whole.”

Mosi has run a number of large temporary science exhibitions over the past 12 months, including the Brains: The Mind as Matter exhibition on tour from the Wellcome Collection in London.

Osborne also announced a £4m grant for Manchester University to develop a new centre for doctoral training, where PhD students will collaborate with researchers from industry to develop materials for demanding environments.

The grant comes from a separate £106m investment in 22 new doctoral training centres, which was announced in March’s Budget.
