Strategic thinking
Arts Council England’s £45m Strategic Touring Programme is designed to encourage collaboration between organisations, so that more people access art.

The first grants were awarded in May 2012 and a range of organisations have been accessing funds since. The money is for arts projects but museums can apply.

Durham County Council secured £150,000 for a project called Generation, involving four venues that want to boost engagement with family audiences: Berwick Visual Arts; DLI Museum and Durham Art Gallery; Towneley Hall, Burnley; and Central Art Gallery, Ashton-under-Lyne. The aim is to create four participatory art exhibitions that will show at each of the venues.

Other successful applicants have included Tate, which was given more than £1m to fund the Artist Rooms tour; £329,000 for Multistory, an exhibition of photos documenting manufacturing industries in British cities that is touring to nine venues, including the National Railway Museum in York and Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery; and £210,000 for the Ikon Gallery in Birmingham for a programme to engage with communities across the Black Country by collaborating with local venues and partners to create a sustainable touring network.

The next deadline for applications to the Strategic Touring Programme is 29 August.
