Why I volunteer
Jill Minchin, Dorset County Museum, Dorchester
I had been a member of the Dorset County Museum and its parent society for many years when I started volunteering here in 2010.
Initially, I began as the administrative assistant to the director and his PA, carrying out various tasks half a day each week. In 2012, I was asked to become the dedicated volunteer coordinator, expanding my time at the museum to a day-and-a-half each week.
I am the point of contact for would-be volunteers, dealing with their applications, taking up references, giving induction tours and setting up successful placements.
As a board member, I have been deeply involved in our successful bid for a Heritage Lottery Fund grant, for our proposed new development, and in the exciting planning and progress of the work.
My days as a civil servant have given me useful office experience, which has come in handy. Also, being retired, I can help at the museum for as much time as they require.Through my volunteering, I have become familiar with every museum department so have an informed overview of the whole, while my board responsibilities have given me valuable practical experience of museum management.
I am now more aware of how much work is required to support a successful museum and just how much is required of salaried staff.
