Why I volunteer

I’m mainly based at Verulamium Museum, which is built on the site of one of the largest Roman settlements in Britain, Verulamium.

I have been photographing some of the 65,000 objects for cataloguing. After a training session, I have photographed Roman tools, toys and, one day, even a Big Mac carton. I’ve always been keen on photography but, until I started here, I had not taken my SLR off the auto setting.

The Talking Buildings project was a joy. I’ve lived in St Albans for 17 years and walked past buildings daily without ever knowing their real significance. We each researched a building and recorded a story that gave the building a “personality”.

The hidden histories project is online and there will be audio players on the hoardings outside the new museum, which opens in St Albans next year, so visitors can listen to the buildings talk about themselves.

I’m currently on sabbatical from work; I have been an IT professional for about 25 years and I have worked in teams and on my own, so volunteering is quite similar in that respect.

I am determined to treat my voluntary work with the same level of respect, keep to commitments and be as productive as possible. I take my work seriously.
