Scottish galleries launch contemporary art programme

National Galleries of Scotland and Glasgow Life form partnership to deliver nationwide celebration in 2014
More than 50 venues are to take part in a nationwide celebration of contemporary art in Scotland, it was announced this week.

The initiative, called Generation, is a partnership between the National Galleries of Scotland and Glasgow Life, the trust that runs the publicly owned cultural venues in the city. Creative Scotland, the national development agency for the arts, screen and creative industries, has given £750,000 to the programme, which will include exhibitions, events and activities targeted specifically at young people.

The project is being developed by a curatorial board that includes representatives from Glasgow Life, the National Galleries of Scotland and Creative Scotland. Katrina Brown, the director of Glasgow-based visual arts organisation the Common Guild, is the programme’s associate curator.

Simon Groom, the director of the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, is one of the members of the curatorial board. He said Generation was about building on the success of the contemporary art scene in Scotland over the past 25 years and making it more visible to more people.

“It is really about highlighting the fact that Scotland is a place where people come to make great art – there is a great sense of possibility here,” Groom said. “We will be pulling together what we see as the iconic works of the past 25 years, and in some cases they have never been shown in Scotland.”

The works on display will be by artists who were born in Scotland as well as those who have lived and studied in the country. These include David Shrigley, Ross Sinclair, Lorna MacIntyre, Toby Paterson and Cathy Wilkes.

The exhibition and events will take place from June to October 2014 and will coincide with Glasgow hosting the Commonwealth Games in summer 2014. The full programme will be announced later in the year.

Generation will include exhibitions of work at all of the National Galleries of Scotland sites in Edinburgh, and the Tramway and the Gallery of Modern Art, which are run by Glasgow Life. An Associates programme will see work shown in a range of smaller venues, from Orkney to the Western Isles to the Borders.
