Glasgow approves Burrell redevelopment funding
Museum expected to reopen in 2020 following £66m investment
Glasgow City Council has committed another £27.3m for the £66m redevelopment of the Burrell Collection, taking its total investment to £33m.
The Heritage Lottery Fund has already pledged £15m to the scheme, which is expected to be complete in late 2020. The Grade A-listed building is in Pollok Country Park.
The 9,0000-strong collection was donated to the City of Glasgow by Sir William and Lady Burrell in 1944.
Chinese art features heavily in the collection and there are also significant late-gothic and early Renaissance artworks of art from northern Europe, including tapestries, stained glass, sculpture and furniture.
Before the Burrell closed in 2015 only about 20% of the collection was on display. The aim is to increase this to 90% in the redeveloped museum.
The Burrell is part of Glasgow Life, which operates sporting and cultural venues in the city.
