Amgueddfa Cymru – National Museum Wales (NMW) has deleted nine curatorial and learning posts, which will save it £400,000 a year.

The posts are across a range of grades, including some management roles.

Of the nine, six are voluntary redundancies, two posts have been redeployed, and one vacant post has been deleted.

The museum has seen a 33% real-terms cut to its budget over the last five years.

It began consulting with staff and trade unions in September on proposals to save £770,000 as part of a plan to cut £3.5m from its budget over three years.

Subsequently, the Welsh government announced a 3.5% increase to NMW's grant-in-aid in the draft budget for 2017-18, but the museum service still needs to make savings.

Museums Journal understands that the museum service has agreed with the trade union Prospect to spread further cuts over several years rather than frontloading them.
